I found that if you put a length of 3/8 clear acrylic tube down the glow staff, the output along the shaft doubles. The tube must but up against the end of the staff.

Another effect: if you take the acrylic tube and cut it into short segments before putting it into the shaft, there's an intense light at each joint.
